    Globe expands renewable energy use

In a move underscoring its environmental commitment, Globe Telecom marked World Environment Day by announcing the expansion of its clean energy program to 33 high-energy utilization sites — including the company’s first renewable energy-powered facilities in Mindanao.

This milestone supports Globe’s broader decarbonization goals and sustainability strategy, as it shifts its operations away from fossil fuels. The company now sources renewable power through the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP) and the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) system, partnering with licensed Retail Electricity Suppliers to tap solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal energy across the grid.

“Each site we shift to clean power isn’t just about reducing emissions – it’s about building a future-proof network that puts people and the planet first,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s chief sustainability and corporate communications officer.

Since adopting clean power in 2017, Globe has increased the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix from 14 percent in 2021 to 24 percent in 2024, covering not just telecom infrastructure but also its corporate offices and mixed-use facilities.

The telco plans to convert over 150 additional sites to renewable energy within the next two years through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), on-site solar installations, and the Retail Aggregation Program (RAP). RAP allows facilities in proximity to pool demand and benefit from cleaner, competitively priced electricity under RCOA.

These initiatives align with Globe’s Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-approved goal to reduce Scopes 1 and 2 emissions by 42 percent and Scope 3 emissions by 25 percent by 2030. Long term, the company aims for a 90 percent cut in total emissions by 2050, contributing to the Philippines’ Paris Agreement commitments.

Globe’s clean energy transition positions the company not only as a sustainability leader in the telecom sector but also as a corporate driver of demand in the Philippines’ evolving renewable energy market.
