Philippine ships told to brace for rising Middle East tensions

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has tightened security protocols for Philippine-flagged vessels as geopolitical strains between the United States and Iran ripple across global shipping lanes.

In Advisory No. 2026-08, issued late Monday, the regulator ordered shipping companies to strictly enforce precautionary measures amid escalating hostilities in the Middle East.

MARINA said it is closely tracking the navigational status and positional data of Philippine-registered ships operating in international waters, particularly those transiting geopolitically sensitive corridors.

The stepped-up oversight follows rising concerns over maritime security risks in key trade arteries near conflict-affected zones. MARINA emphasized that its directive aligns with guidance from international maritime authorities, reinforcing compliance with global safety standards while safeguarding Filipino crews.

An internal review of the Philippine-Registered Overseas Fleet (PROF) has been conducted, with special scrutiny on vessels operating near high-risk areas. Shipping firms have been urged to reassess voyage plans, heighten onboard security readiness, and avoid volatile passages when feasible.

“MARINA remains vigilant and ready to take further necessary measures to safeguard Philippine-registered vessels and Filipino seafarers,” the agency said, signaling readiness to escalate interventions if the situation deteriorates.

Beyond regulatory action, the Department of Migrant Workers and the Department of Foreign Affairs are coordinating to monitor affected Filipino seafarers and ensure access to assistance should tensions intensify.

The advisory underscores the Philippines’ proactive risk management posture as global supply chains face renewed uncertainty.

With maritime trade underpinning much of the country’s export economy and overseas employment base, regulators appear determined to stay ahead of potential disruptions before they reach Philippine shores.
