Jovic again plays Eala’s grass-court spoiler

Different city. Different tournament. Different court surface.

Same headache for Alex Eala.

Just days after lifting the biggest trophy of her young career at the Lexus Birmingham Open, Eala arrived at London’s HSBC Championships carrying momentum, confidence, and a shiny new grass-court title.

Waiting on the other side of the net, however, was a familiar roadblock named Iva Jovic.

The result was familiar, too.

Jovic delivered another masterclass against her Filipina friend, dismantling Eala 6-2, 6-2 in a match that felt less like a contest and more like a carefully executed blueprint.

Back in March, the American teenager had also beaten Eala in straight sets on the clay courts of Roland Garros. Grass, it turns out, offered no escape route.

Jovic was everywhere and everything all at once—hammering forehands into open spaces, threading backhands with laser-like precision, and finishing points at the net with the confidence of a seasoned veteran.

Eala often found herself either half a step late or a few inches long, watching balls sail beyond the baseline or whistle past her reach.

The numbers painted an equally unforgiving picture.

Jovic fired four aces, converted five of seven break-point opportunities, won 80 percent of her first-serve points, and captured 55 percent of points behind her second serve. Most tellingly, she won 61 of the match’s 98 total points.

That is not just winning. That’s taking ownership of the scoreboard.

For Eala, the defeat serves as a reminder that grass-court success is rarely a straight line. One week she was the queen of Birmingham. A few days later, she was packing her bags in London.

The good news? Wimbledon is still on the horizon.

Before heading to the All England Club, Eala is expected to make one more stop at the Rothesay International Eastbourne, a final tune-up event where she can sharpen her game—and perhaps find answers to the Jovic puzzle that continues to follow her from clay to grass.
