Maersk service boosts Iloilo’s gateway ambitions further

The arrival of Maersk’s PH6 service at the Visayas Container Terminal (VCT) in Iloilo marks more than the addition of another shipping route. It signals the growing importance of Western Visayas in the country’s evolving logistics landscape and strengthens Iloilo’s role as a regional trade gateway.

Operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), VCT welcomed the inaugural call of the PH6 service, which introduces a fixed weekly Tuesday schedule linking Iloilo to key ports including Yantian, Hong Kong, Batangas, Tagoloan, and Cebu.

The new service brings a level of predictability that is increasingly valuable in global shipping. Regular schedules enable better berth planning, more efficient yard management, and improved deployment of equipment and labor. These operational gains can reduce vessel waiting times and improve turnaround performance, helping ports handle cargo more efficiently.

Beyond terminal operations, the development carries wider implications for regional trade. Direct connections to major transshipment hubs such as Yantian and Hong Kong reduce reliance on indirect shipping routes and multiple cargo transfers.

Fewer handling points can translate into lower logistics costs, reduced risk of delays, and better cargo visibility throughout the supply chain.

Businesses in Panay and neighboring provinces stand to benefit from more reliable shipping schedules. Importers can better manage inventory levels, while exporters gain improved access to international markets through faster and more predictable transport links.

The move also reflects a broader trend in Philippine logistics. As trade volumes grow, shipping lines and port operators are increasingly investing in regional gateways to reduce congestion in major urban ports and create a more balanced national logistics network.

The PH6 service strengthens VCT’s position as an international cargo gateway rather than merely a domestic feeder port.

The inclusion of Iloilo in Maersk’s service network signals confidence in the region’s economic potential and the capability of its port infrastructure.

Taken together, the development reinforces Iloilo’s emergence as a key logistics hub supporting trade, investment, and economic growth across Western Visayas.
