Kai’s biggest assist yet is on the way

Kai Sotto has spent most of his life preparing for the next big thing.

The next game. The next tournament. The next leap in a basketball journey that has unfolded under the watchful eyes of Filipino fans.

This time, the next big thing is considerably smaller.

The 7-foot-2 Gilas Pilipinas center announced Monday that he and wife Rere Madrid are expecting their first child, sharing a heartfelt video that turned a private family secret into a celebration.

“For a while, we’ve been living in our own little world,” Sotto wrote on Instagram. “Holding onto a secret that made every day feel like an adventure.”

The post revealed a couple savoring a life-changing moment before finally letting everyone else in on it.

“Every moment, every plan, every quiet smile, it was all for you,” Sotto wrote. “And now, we finally get to share it.”

The reactions were priceless.

Sotto’s family greeted the news with tears and embraces. On Madrid’s side, shock arrived before joy. Her brother, actor Ruru Madrid, looked momentarily speechless, while her father searched for clues that it might all be an elaborate prank.

It was not.

“We’re having a baby,” Sotto declared. “Our greatest adventure is just beginning, and you’re already the best part of it.”

The announcement comes just weeks after the couple revealed they had tied the knot in a simple wedding ceremony attended by a small circle of family and friends. Looking back, those photos now seem to contain a secret hidden in plain sight.

For years, fans have measured Sotto’s progress through points, rebounds and blocked shots. Soon, a different scoreboard awaits.

First kick. First lullaby. The stork’s arrival.

Basketball may still be his profession, but fatherhood is about to become his newest full-time assignment.

And unlike any opponent he has faced, this is one challenge Sotto appears delighted to lose sleep over.
