Homburg exit gives Eala unexpected Wimbledon boost

Alex Eala’s stay in Bad Homburg Open was short, but the timing of her exit may not be the worst thing that happened this week.

Fresh from a breakthrough run in Berlin, the 21-year-old Filipina arrived carrying confidence, a career-high ranking and a left shoulder wrapped in tape. With Wimbledon fast approaching, every match came with a question of balance between momentum and preservation.

For three games, Eala looked ready for another deep run.

She surged to a 3-0 lead against Belgium’s Elise Mertens, striking cleanly and moving with the freedom that has become a hallmark of her rise on grass.

Then the match settled into Mertens’ preferred rhythm.

The Belgian, who has yet to lose a first-round match on the WTA Tour this season, pieced together nine consecutive games spanning the opening and second sets. From there, she controlled the tempo and the scoreboard.

The statistics reflected her command.

Mertens fired 10 aces, produced 27 winners and converted four of nine break-point chances in a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Eala finished with two aces, 17 winners and one break from five opportunities.

It was also a familiar result. The loss marked Eala’s third against Mertens since their first meeting in 2023. Some opponents simply have a knack for finding the right answers at the right moments.

Yet the bigger picture remains encouraging.

Bad Homburg is expected to continue under sweltering conditions, while Wimbledon now sits squarely on the horizon. Eala, seeded No. 29, will not take the court until the second round, giving her valuable extra days to recover and sharpen her game.

For a player coming off an emotionally and physically demanding stretch, that time could be worth far more than another match or two.

She also remains scheduled to play doubles with Venus Williams, ensuring her grass-court preparations are not quite finished.

Sometimes a tournament ends early so the next one can begin sooner.
