DOE welcomes start-up of Cotabato solar power plant

The Department of Energy has announced the first phase of the Tantangan solar project in South Cotabato is now energized. Developed by Apolaki Seven Inc. and IbVogt, this initial section delivers 74.5 megawatts, with full completion set for October 2026 to reach 99 megawatts total alongside battery storage. Once fully running, the facility will power about 68,000 homes, cut nearly 114,000 metric tons of carbon emissions yearly, and create local jobs. Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said the project boosts Mindanao’s power supply and national energy security by reducing reliance on imported fuel. As of March this year, solar power makes up 11.7 percent of the country’s total electricity capacity.
