Forget stepping on the bathroom scale. The next big weight-loss gadget could simply ask you to breathe.
Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed a handheld breathalyzer that detects when the body switches from burning carbohydrates to fat—all from a single exhale. The smartphone-assisted device analyzes acetone, a naturally occurring molecule released in the breath during fat metabolism, delivering laboratory-grade results in about 90 seconds.
The idea, published in Cell Press, is deceptively simple: your breath may know more about your metabolism than your smartwatch.
Scientists have tracked breath acetone for years, but doing so usually required bulky laboratory equipment or consumer devices that worked only when acetone levels were unusually high. After a decade of engineering, the Swiss team has shrunk that capability into a portable sensor small enough for everyday use.
In tests involving 12 healthy volunteers and 312 breath samples, the device closely matched the accuracy of mass spectrometry, the laboratory gold standard. It also successfully tracked subtle metabolic shifts during exercise, fasting, high-carbohydrate meals and ketogenic diets.
The findings suggest the technology could do far more than satisfy the curiosity of fitness enthusiasts.
Doctors could eventually use it to personalize treatments for obesity, diabetes, epilepsy and other metabolic disorders without repeatedly drawing blood. For consumers, it offers a real-time glimpse into whether that workout, fasting routine or keto meal is actually nudging the body into fat-burning mode.
The device doesn’t just sniff your breath—it also coaches users through the correct exhale using a smartphone app and rejects poor-quality samples to improve accuracy.
The technology has already left the lab. ETH Zurich spin-off Alivion AG has commercialized the analyzer as Nutrion, which is now being used in clinical studies and by athletes and weight-loss enthusiasts.
If the humble breathalyzer once belonged to traffic police, it may soon become the newest referee in the business of personal health.
