Aboitiz Foundation is growing its partnerships with local groups across Cebu to boost community-led forest restoration under its CarbonPH climate initiative. Working with officials in Danao City and Balamban, the foundation is providing training and resources to help residents restore forests while building sustainable livelihoods.
Over 80 members of 14 people’s organizations in Danao completed training on native tree growing, fruit farming and sustainable land use, led by experts from Cebu Technological University–Argao. Nursery materials were also turned over to support community plant growing and tree-planting activities. In Balamban, farmers and fisherfolk received nursery equipment to produce seedlings for reforestation and watershed care.
CarbonPH is a 40-year program to restore 71,000 hectares of forests across Cebu, with an initial focus on Danao and Balamban. The initiative aims to nurture 10 million trees while strengthening local climate resilience.
“Restoring our forests for the long term starts with strong communities,” said Aboitiz Foundation President Ginggay Hontiveros-Malvar. Balamban Mayor Amos Edwin Cabahug noted the partnership supports both environmental protection and livelihood opportunities for residents.
