BYD expands Philippine push as EV demand grows

BYD is strengthening its presence in the Philippines as the country becomes an increasingly important market for electric vehicles and new energy vehicles.

The visit of BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu last month highlighted the Chinese automaker’s growing focus on the local market, which he described as one of the region’s “most exciting and promising markets” for new energy vehicles.

“The Philippines has become one of the most exciting and promising markets for New Energy Vehicles in the region,” Wang said, citing the country’s growing electrification momentum and the efforts of local partner ACMobility to support customers.

During his visit, Wang toured BYD dealerships, DENZA showrooms in Alabang and Cebu, and ACMobility Charging Hubs to assess market developments and the expansion of EV infrastructure. He also met with employees, dealers, and business partners as the company gathers insights for its local growth plans.

The visit comes as demand for electrified vehicles continues to rise. New energy vehicles accounted for 22.3 percent of new vehicle sales in the Philippines as of June, showing that EV adoption is gaining ground beyond early adopters.

BYD has expanded its local network to 81 dealerships nationwide, while premium brand DENZA has four dealerships. The wider footprint is expected to help the company reach more customers and strengthen its position in the growing EV market.

Wang’s visit underscores BYD’s view of the Philippines as a long-term growth market. The company’s expansion strategy centers on increasing product availability, widening retail reach, developing charging infrastructure, and improving customer support.

As more automakers enter the Philippine EV market, competition is expected to intensify. For consumers, this could translate into more choices and faster development of the ecosystem needed to support wider electric vehicle adoption.
