Maynilad completes Las Piñas septage facility upgrade

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc. has completed upgrades to its South Septage Treatment Facility in Pamplona, Las Piñas City, bringing the site into full compliance with updated Department of Environment and Natural Resources effluent rules. Announced Wednesday, the project began in 2023 and aligns operations with DENR Administrative Order 2016-08 as amended by DAO 2021-19. It is the first of Maynilad’s three septage treatment facilities to be fully upgraded under the latest regulatory standards, with no project cost disclosed.

A key improvement is the adoption of the four-stage Bardenpho conventional activated sludge process, an advanced biological treatment system that more effectively removes nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. Reducing these nutrients before discharge lowers pollutant loads in receiving water bodies and lessens associated environmental impacts. Operational since December 2015, the facility treats septage from septic tanks across the southern part of Maynilad’s franchise area, with a daily treatment capacity of 300 cubic meters, serving customers in Pasay, Makati, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, and Cavite.

“This investment is about keeping our wastewater facilities aligned with increasingly stringent environmental requirements and continuously improving the quality of treatment we provide,” said Maynilad president and chie executive officer Ramoncito Fernandez. He added the upgrade boosts effluent quality and cuts environmental pollution while strengthening sanitation services across the southern West Zone. The facility forms part of ongoing investments in sanitation and wastewater management; Maynilad also operates septage treatment plants in Quezon City’s Project 7 and Caloocan City’s Dagat-dagatan. As the country’s largest private water concessionaire by customer base, Maynilad serves multiple cities and towns across Metro Manila and Cavite province.
