The Department of Energy is taking urgent steps to end rotational outages and stabilize Visayas power supply.
Key generating units are returning online: Cebu’s 82-MW Unit 1 resumed operations Sept 5; Therma Visayas (169 MW) due Sept 15; Mindanao facilities will add capacity through Sept 21, when full grid normalcy is projected.
Some 253 MW of battery storage is being deployed for quick backup, alongside stricter plant audits, accountability reviews, and transmission upgrades. Interim support includes power barges, while major baseload and renewable capacity expansions are set for 2028 onward.
Long-term energy plans are also advancing for Mindoro and Palawan to strengthen reliability across island regions.
