Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. (TMP) has produced more than 1.2 million vehicles locally in 38 years, building a manufacturing base that is allowing more specialized automotive work, supplier activity, and value creation to take place in the Philippines.
TMP currently produces the Vios, Innova, and Next Generation Tamaraw at its Santa Rosa, Laguna manufacturing complex, which has annual capacity of more than 60,000 completely knocked-down units.
The milestone reflects nearly four decades of local operations spanning vehicle assembly, welding, painting, quality control, and logistics.
That capability was highlighted at the 2026 Toyota Asia Pacific Skills Contest in Thailand, where the Philippine delegation won six medals across all categories.
It was TMP’s first complete podium finish across all categories since the Philippines began competing in the regional contest in 2006.
Christian Cobilla and Wilmer Penalla won silver medals in Painting-Team Leader and Logistics-Team Member, respectively. Noel Elpos, Edwin Bocaya, Loreto Muyna, and Ramel Sarmiento took bronze in Logistics, Assembly, Quality Control, and Welding.
TMP has now collected 14 medals, including four golds, since joining the competition.
The achievement comes as TMP takes on more specialized manufacturing activities locally.
Its newly operational in-house vehicle conversion facility allows the Next Generation Tamaraw to be transformed into six body configurations, expanding the scope of work that can be performed in the country.
The facility also opens opportunities for Filipino designers, engineers, suppliers, and body builders to participate in more specialized production, potentially increasing demand for local components, fabrication, engineering, and other automotive services.
That deeper localization can help retain more economic value from vehicle production in the Philippines while giving domestic suppliers opportunities to move into higher-value activities.
For TMP, broader local capabilities can also provide greater flexibility in producing vehicles for different applications and market requirements.
The 1.2-million-unit milestone therefore represents more than cumulative production. It marks the scale of an industrial ecosystem that can support additional supplier investment and more sophisticated automotive manufacturing.
As TMP expands the range of work performed locally, the challenge will be to translate that capacity into deeper supplier participation, greater local content, and sustained investment across the automotive value chain.
