The Department of Transportation (DOTr) held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 Station, a critical piece of the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP). This facility falls under Contract Package 109 (CP109), a civil works agreement covering one underground station and associated tunnels spanning 2.413 kilometers between Taguig City and Pasay City.
The station will be constructed beneath NAIA Terminal 3’s open parking area, with direct connections to the terminal building coordinated through New NAIA Infra Corporation (NNIC). Tunneling works will utilize a tunnel boring machine, while the station itself will rise via the cut-and-cover method. The P16-billion contract was awarded to the DMCI-Taisei Corporation joint venture.
Financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the full MMSP carries an approved budget of P488.48 billion. Stretching 33.103 kilometers, the subway is engineered to slash travel time between Valenzuela City and NAIA Terminal 3 from over 90 minutes to roughly 41 minutes. The NAIA Terminal 3 Station will offer 19,179.50 square meters of floor space, with daily passenger volumes forecast at 70,000 by 2035 and 74,000 by 2045.
The complete system will operate 30 eight-car trainsets at up to 80 kilometers per hour. Targeted for full completion in the third quarter of 2031, the subway will include 17 stations running from Valenzuela to Parañaque City, extending to Bicutan Station in Taguig, with a dedicated spur to NAIA Terminal 3 in Pasay. This development significantly enhances regional transport links, streamlines airport access and eases existing mobility bottlenecks across Metro Manila.
