Gov’t launches world’s first sex-sorting buffalo semen lab

The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) have inaugurated the world’s first laboratory fully dedicated to sex-sorting buffalo semen, marking a major policy and infrastructure milestone to strengthen domestic food security, cut import dependence, and build a self-sustaining local dairy sector.

Situated in the Science City of Muñoz, the ₱237.9-million facility uses flow cytometry technology to separate sperm carrying X and Y chromosomes with about 90 percent accuracy, enabling farmers to purposefully breed female buffalo for dairy production or males for meat and draft work; sorted semen is cryogenically preserved for nationwide artificial insemination rollouts. Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized the facility’s strategic value, noting it gives farmers full control over breeding output, generates local savings on foreign exchange, expands income streams for producers, and anchors national food security goals. The PCC targets annual output of 170,000 sex-sorted semen straws, prioritizing female offspring to rapidly grow the local dairy herd—an urgent intervention given current domestic milk production covers less than 5 percent of national demand, leaving the country heavily reliant on imported dairy goods and breeding stock. Local production is also designed to cut procurement costs, eliminate biosecurity risks from cross-border livestock movements, and ensure breeding stock is adapted to Philippine tropical conditions. Initially focused on elite water buffalo bulls, the technology is scalable to other ruminants. Funded under U.S. Public Law 480 and completed in three months through the Intensified Community-based Enterprise Development program, the lab will begin field distribution in the fourth quarter of 2026, with the first targeted calves expected by late 2027. This initiative aligns with core agricultural policies to build resilient local value chains, reduce import vulnerability, and modernize the country’s livestock and dairy breeding systems.
