Cosmetics industry ramps up sustainability push under EPR

The Philippine cosmetics industry is stepping up efforts to cut packaging waste and improve recovery systems as companies navigate mounting responsibilities under the country’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework.

The Chamber of Cosmetics Industry of the Philippines (CCIP) put sustainability in the spotlight at its third General Members Meeting at the SMX Convention Center on Wednesday, bringing together industry players, regulators and sustainability advocates.

Held under the theme “Beauty for Tomorrow: Innovation, Responsibility and Growth,” the gathering focused on practical ways to build sustainability into cosmetics operations—from packaging design and material use to waste collection and disposal.

National Solid Waste Commission Commissioner Dr. Joseph Jocson tackled EPR-conscious packaging, giving cosmetics companies guidance on aligning packaging practices with environmental regulations.

The issue is particularly pressing for an industry heavily reliant on plastic bottles, containers and other packaging. Companies are facing growing pressure to reduce waste while improving systems to recover and recycle used materials.

Miguel Yorro, vice president for business development at Restore Solutions PH, discussed ways to close the circularity loop and address persistent gaps in waste collection and disposal.

Officials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Environmental Management Bureau also briefed industry members on chemical regulations, chemical use and the importation of chemicals and raw materials.

CCIP stressed that sustainability cannot be tackled by individual companies alone. Progress, it said, will depend on coordinated action across the value chain.

“Sustainability is a shared responsibility. Real progress happens when regulators, manufacturers, brands, suppliers, and consumers work together,” Anjo Tee said in his closing remarks.

He urged industry players to turn the discussions into concrete initiatives that can advance responsible growth while helping the cosmetics sector meet its environmental obligations.
