Meralco, BTCI launch talent farm program to train next-generation energy workforce

The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has joined forces with Banahaw Technological College Inc. (BTCI) through a newly signed agreement designed to prepare students for real-world careers in the energy sector through a specialized talent farm program.

The initiative aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry needs. By connecting academic training with practical experience, the program ensures students get early access to modern power technologies, direct mentorship from Meralco engineers, and clear career pathways in the energy sector.

Meralco’s talent farm initiative serves as a strategic strategy to build a steady, sustainable pool of skilled technical workers. Under the agreement, BTCI students will receive structured hands-on training tailored to power industry standards, dedicated mentorship from seasoned Meralco engineers, and direct career opportunities aligned with the power distributor’s operational needs upon graduation.

“With this partnership, we aim to help the students of BTCI become immediately employable,” said Hans Montenegro, Meralco First Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer. “Meralco is here to support students in achieving their career goals, and we hope to replicate this successful pilot nationwide.”

The collaboration marks a major step forward for local technical education, offering students a direct route to long-term employment and career growth.

“There is a future here in Meralco because there is career growth and development. This partnership is a big opportunity for our students and our school,” said Engr. Tommy Joseph Abustan, BTCI president and CEO.

Engr. Froilan Savet, Meralco Senior Vice President and Head of Networks, emphasized the value of practical guidance. “Our Meralco engineers are ready to mentor and guide them while providing meaningful industry exposure that they can use for their professional development,” Savet noted.

BTCI, located in Lucban, Quezon, is accredited by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). With over 600 students, the college specializes in key fields directly tied to power distribution, including Electrical Technology, Electrical Installation and Maintenance, and Mechatronics. Its practical, skill-focused curriculum makes it an ideal training ground for job-ready technical personnel.

Meralco currently provides electric service across Metro Manila, Rizal, Bulacan, Cavite, parts of Laguna and Quezon, and select towns in Batangas. Through this talent farm initiative, the power distributor aims to secure a steady supply of well-trained professionals to support its expanding network across the region.
