CHP cement plants recycle 50 million liters of water annually

Concreat Holdings Philippines (CHP) is recovering and reusing 50 million liters of water annually across its cement plants in Cebu and Rizal, bolstering efforts to conserve freshwater as climate extremes put pressure on water resources.

The company’s water conservation initiatives span APO Cement in Naga, Cebu, and Solid Cement in Antipolo, Rizal, where recovery, recycling, and closed-loop systems help reduce freshwater demand and improve operational efficiency.

“Water conservation is not simply a response to periods of water scarcity. It is an important part of how we operate our plants responsibly,” CHP President and CEO Herbert Consunji said.

At APO Cement, water recovered from the plant’s reverse osmosis (RO) treatment process is collected for reuse rather than discharged into the main canal. From 2021 to 2025, the system recovered a cumulative 75 million liters of water, equivalent to about 30 Olympic-size swimming pools.

The plant also collects rainwater for treatment and reuse in road sprinkling and housekeeping, while recovered cooling tower water supports operational needs, including emergency fire protection and road dust suppression. These measures account for approximately 27 million liters of water reused annually.

At Solid Cement, a closed-loop circulation and recovery system conserves approximately 23 million liters of water each year. Recovered water is also used for gas conditioning and dust suppression, helping reduce freshwater consumption and wastewater from cooling operations.

The initiatives come as prolonged dry spells and extreme weather events, including El Niño, heighten concerns over water availability. By integrating water recovery into routine manufacturing, CHP aims to make more efficient use of available resources while maintaining plant operations.

The company said the initiatives form part of its broader environmental efforts, underscoring the role of resource efficiency in more responsible cement manufacturing.
