Manila Water boosts Cardona plant operations, steps up El Niño readiness for steady supply

Manila Water is ramping up operations at its Cardona Water Treatment Plant in Rizal to secure reliable water supply as the country braces for a strong El Niño that may last until the first half of 2027. The facility, which draws water from Laguna Lake, normally produces 100 million liters daily and can reach up to 110 million liters when water quality is good, giving the company an extra source to complement supply from Angat Dam and other facilities.

Since opening in 2019, the plant has helped diversify the company’s water sources and reduce reliance on a single supply, a key strategy amid changing weather patterns. It currently delivers round-the-clock water to about 800,000 people across several Rizal towns and parts of Pasig City, while also easing load on the wider distribution network serving Metro Manila. Fitted with advanced treatment systems including reverse osmosis and water recovery technology, the plant is built to keep service steady even during prolonged dry weather.

This facility is part of Manila Water’s broader efforts to strengthen supply resilience, alongside ongoing projects such as the East Bay Phase 2 and Kaysakat Water Treatment Plant. By making the most of existing resources while building new ones, the company aims to keep water services dependable and give consumers greater peace of mind throughout the challenging El Niño period.
