The Department of Agriculture (DA) and Davao-based Abante Agri-Products Philippines Inc. have shipped 32,000 fresh young coconuts (buko) to Monrovia, Liberia, marking a milestone that could unlock new West African export opportunities for Philippine agriculture. Transported in two refrigerated containers with a total value of USD 22,400, the 50-metric-ton shipment serves a dual role: providing immediate humanitarian aid through community feeding programs in Liberia while testing the viability of a promising new commercial trade route.
This historic consignment highlights the growing international potential of the Philippine coconut industry and advances government efforts to diversify farm exports beyond traditional markets. By establishing a foothold in West Africa, the initiative aims to boost long-term demand for local produce and connect Mindanao’s coconut farmers to higher-value global buyers. Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized that turning initial shipments into sustained repeat orders and reliable supply chains will be key to driving higher farm-gate prices, strengthening the national coconut sector, and delivering lasting economic benefits to local farming communities.
