Eala loses in Ningbo, but wins a spot in rankings

Alex Eala may have run out of answers against fellow southpaw Diana Shnaider in Ningbo, but her China campaign still delivered a little consolation: a one-place climb in the world rankings.

The Filipina’s Round of 16 run at the BNB Ningbo Open ended Thursday with a 7-5, 6-4 defeat to the sixth-seeded and world No. 13  Russian in a one-hour, 55-minute match. Shnaider needed seven match points to finally close the door, making Eala’s exit anything but a quick goodbye.

Yet the tournament was not a complete washout. Eala earned enough ranking points from her first-round victory to rise from No. 20 to No. 19 in the world. She lost the match that mattered that day, but gained ground in the longer game of climbing the WTA ladder.

Against Shnaider, however, Eala discovered that being left-handed does not always mean having the upper hand. The two were among the WTA Tour’s highest-ranked left-handers, and the Russian proved more adept at navigating a matchup in which the usual southpaw surprise was in short supply.

The loss stretched Eala’s tour-level record against fellow left-handers to 1-4, while Shnaider improved hers to 11-9. The numbers suggest a curious challenge for the Filipina: an advantage that can unsettle right-handed opponents becomes less unusual when the player across the net shares the same angles.

The match turned at 4-4 in the opening set, when Eala sent a forehand wide to surrender serve. The second set brought more opportunities, but also more errors. Eala finished with 19 unforced errors against 11 winners in the set, while Shnaider weathered a seven-deuce final game to seal the win.

Eala now heads to Tokyo for the Pan Pacific Open, the final WTA 500 event of the season. There, she will have another shot to translate ranking progress into a deeper tournament run.

Ningbo reminded us that progress in tennis isn’t always measured by the scoreboard. Sometimes, even after a defeat, a player can leave with a higher ranking—and a clearer idea of what needs fixing before the next serve.
