Junior queens, tour-worn poise: Eala outclasses Stojsavljevic in Tokyo

Two US Open junior champions met at the Toray Pan Pacific Open, but there was little suspense about who had the better grasp of life on the senior circuit. Alexandra Eala, the Philippines’ increasingly assured star, swept past Britain’s Mika Stojsavljevic 6-1, 6-2 in 75 minutes, proving that experience can be every bit as potent as a thunderous forehand.

Eala, the eighth seed, won the girls’ crown at Flushing Meadows in 2022, two years before Stojsavljevic followed suit in 2024. At 21, she is four years older than the 17-year-old Briton — a modest gap in ordinary life, but a potentially enormous one in professional tennis, where learning to win matters as much as learning to hit.

Stojsavljevic certainly knows how to hit. The world No. 411 unleashed 24 winners, three times Eala’s eight, producing enough clean strikes to suggest a far closer contest. Unfortunately for the wild card, tennis does not award bonus points for aesthetic appeal. Her 41 unforced errors told the less flattering half of the story, as raw power repeatedly surrendered to impatience.

Eala, by contrast, offered a masterclass in controlled aggression. She landed 68 per cent of her first serves and won 72 per cent of those points, keeping her opponent at arm’s length while refusing to be drawn into a slugfest. When Stojsavljevic threatened at 0-40 in the second set’s second game, Eala responded with two service winners and a decisive one-two combination. Crisis averted; lesson delivered.

The Filipina’s growing WTA Tour experience showed in the small details: measured shot selection, disciplined serving and an instinct for shutting doors before opponents could force them open. Stojsavljevic had the bigger highlights; Eala had the better match.

Next comes Singapore finalist Talia Gibson, who defeated qualifier Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 7-5. It promises a sterner examination. For now, Eala has demonstrated that junior glory may open the door to professional tennis, but composure is what helps keep it open.
