The Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) has expressed support for Prime Infra’s 1,400-megawatt Pakil Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Project in Laguna, as the developer advances a facility designed to strengthen grid reliability and support renewable energy integration.
LLDA General Manager Leopoldo Parumog visited the project site on October 23 and received a briefing on its progress, including a tour of the upper basin, a key component of the planned storage system.
“I’m happy to know and witness what is going on here. Full support naman ang LLDA sa project na ito,” Parumog said.
Ahunan Power Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Prime Infra, is developing the facility, which is designed to deliver 1,400 megawatts of generating capacity and 14,000 megawatt-hours of energy storage once operational.
The pumped storage system will use electricity during off-peak periods to move water to an elevated reservoir, then release it through generating equipment when demand rises. This allows stored energy to be dispatched during periods of higher electricity consumption, potentially helping balance fluctuations in renewable power generation.
The government has recognized Pakil PSP as an Energy Project of National Significance, reflecting its strategic role in the country’s power infrastructure. However, its contribution to grid stability will depend on project delivery and integration into the electricity system.
Ahunan Power President Noel Gonzales emphasized the importance of Laguna Lake to the development and the company’s commitment to responsible infrastructure construction.
“Prime Infra and Ahunan recognize the significance of the lake as vital to our Pakil Pumped Storage Project,” Gonzales said.
The visit also included LLDA Enforcement Division Chief Marian Soriano, Surveillance Monitoring Division Engineer Bernadette Valle and Prime Infra Foundation Operations and Programs Head Bernadette Tan.
Following the site inspection, Ahunan and Prime Infra Foundation donated 100 packs of rice to the LLDA for distribution to fisherfolk communities around Laguna Lake.
“We share the same vision and we’re happy to contribute to driving growth for the area through our project and community programs,” Gonzales said.
The project combines large-scale energy storage with a development footprint in a lake-sensitive area, making coordination with environmental authorities an important part of its implementation.
