Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. (Metrobank) has been named the Philippines’ Strongest Bank for the sixth consecutive year by The Asian Banker, with its financial performance, asset quality and capital position underpinning the latest recognition.
The distinction is part of The Asian Banker’s annual ranking of the world’s 1,000 largest and strongest banks, which evaluates institutions on financial performance, balance sheet strength, liquidity, asset quality and risk management.
Metrobank reported net income of P24.9 billion in the first half of 2026, as consolidated assets increased 12.7 percent to P3.9 trillion. Total equity stood at P409.7 billion, while its capital adequacy ratio reached 14.9 percent and Common Equity Tier 1 ratio was 14.2 percent, both above regulatory requirements.
Asset quality indicators also remained comparatively favorable. The bank’s non-performing loan ratio stood at 1.8 percent during the period, below the banking industry’s 3.4 percent average, while its NPL coverage ratio reached 133.3 percent, providing a buffer against potential credit losses.
“Our strength comes from the trust our customers place in us and the dedication of our Metrobankers, who remain committed to delivering financial solutions that help our clients succeed in different market conditions,” said Metrobank president Fabian S. Dee.
He said the recognition reflected the bank’s efforts to grow alongside clients, communities and partners, adding that Metrobank would continue to strengthen its capabilities, manage risks prudently and create long-term stakeholder value.
The Asian Banker’s assessment includes reviews by an independent panel of central bankers, global financial experts and research professionals. Established in Singapore in 1997, the organization provides research and intelligence for the financial services industry.
The latest accolade adds to Metrobank’s industry recognition in 2026, including the Cesar E.A. Virata Award, the highest honor at the PDS Annual Awards. The bank also earned top rankings in the Local Currency Bonds and G3 Bonds categories at the Asset Benchmark Research Awards.
While the consecutive awards reinforce Metrobank’s standing in the domestic banking sector, its continued performance will depend on maintaining asset quality, capital strength and disciplined risk management amid changing economic conditions.
