Consumers drive Philippine AI use as businesses lag

Consumers account for 80–85 percent of artificial intelligence usage in the Philippines, far outpacing corporate deployment and underscoring the untapped potential for businesses to adopt the technology, according to the e-Conomy SEA 2026 report by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company.

Enterprise applications represent just 15–20 percent of Philippine AI usage measured in tokens, the units used to process information through AI models. The gap suggests that while Filipinos are already using AI in their daily lives, companies have yet to translate that familiarity into widespread workplace applications.

The Philippines is among Southeast Asian markets where individual adoption leads business deployment, alongside Indonesia and Vietnam. Consumer uses span work, education, healthcare and interactions with digital platforms.

The contrast is sharpest with Singapore and Malaysia, where enterprises account for about 45–60 percent of AI usage, reflecting deeper integration into software development, cloud infrastructure, productivity tools and customer services.

The report identifies the Philippines and Indonesia as having considerable headroom to expand their generative AI user bases. Greater awareness, local-language services and practical applications could bring more users into the fold.

But wider adoption will also depend on the infrastructure needed to support it.

AI cloud provider Aolani is partnering with NVIDIA to deploy 22,000 graphics processing units across Malaysia and the Philippines in early 2027, expanding total capacity beyond 100 megawatts. The report did not disclose how much of the planned capacity would be allocated to the Philippines.

Across Southeast Asia, the report says scaling AI will require more data center capacity, reliable and sustainable electricity, workforce training, and stronger safeguards for security and privacy.

For businesses, however, access to computing power is only part of the equation. Lower operating costs and clear returns on investment will be critical to moving AI from experimentation to routine use.

The consumer-led adoption pattern offers Philippine companies a ready base of AI familiarity to build on. The challenge is to turn individual use into measurable gains in productivity, customer service and business operations.
