    Cemex building 10-megawatt ground-mounted solar plant with Filinvest unit

    Cement manufacturer Cemex Philippines has signed a contract with Filinvest-ENGIE Renewable Energy Enterprise Inc. (FREE) to construct a 10.08-megawatt ground-mounted solar system in Naga, Cebu.

    The solar power facility will be built on Cemex’ Apo cement plant to help it cut the company’s annual carbon emissions by over 10,000 metric tons.

    Luis Franco, Cemex Philippines president and chief executive officer, said the project is part of its goal to reduce Scope 2 emissions from electricity sources to less than 24 kilogram of carbon dioxide per ton of cementitious products by 2030.

    The amount involved in the development of the project although the project is set for completion next year and enable Cemex to widen its carbon-free electricity sources and become the biggest user of solar energy among cement plants in the Philippines.

    FREE is a joint venture company of FDC Utilities Inc. (FDCUI), the power utility arm of Filinvest Development Corp. and ENGIE Services Philippines, the local division of ENGIE, is a global leader in low-carbon energy and services.

    Cemex and ENGIE also signed a memorandum of understanding to explore various renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions for Cemex’ plant facilities in Naga, Cebu, to help it advance its sustainability goals.
