Meralco affiliate MGEN Gas Energy Holdings Inc. (MNatural Gas) is optimistic about winning a contract to build a new 600 megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired power plant in Singapore. Yari Miralao, president and CEO of MNatural Gas, confirmed that the company submitted its bid earlier this month and is awaiting a decision from the Singapore government, expected by year-end or early 2024.
The project, which would utilize advanced combined-cycle gas turbine technology, is part of MGen’s broader strategy to invest in cutting-edge energy infrastructure. MNatural Gas is a subsidiary of Meralco Power Gen Corp. (MGen), the power generation arm of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), and will pursue the bid through its joint venture with Pacific Light Power Pte. Ltd. (PLP). PLP, which holds a 58% stake, has a strong presence in Singapore’s energy market.
Miralao emphasized that the new facility, if successful, will be among the most reliable and efficient on the Singapore grid. The move is also part of MGen’s commitment to supporting the region’s clean energy transition and enhancing its competitiveness.
In addition to the 600 MW project, PLP was awarded a contract earlier this year to build, own, and operate two 100 MW fast-start gas turbines, further expanding its footprint in Singapore’s energy market. This includes a hydrogen-ready gas turbine capable of reaching full capacity within 18 minutes, set to provide essential ancillary reserve services.
With its ongoing projects, including an 800 MW natural gas plant, PLP is poised to continue playing a key role in the island nation’s evolving energy landscape.
