50 days left but barely 25 percent of SIMs are registered – DICT

Barely a fourth or 24.26 percent of subscriber identity modules or SIMs have thus far registered, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said on Wednesday.

This translates to 41 million SIMs of the total mobile phone subscribers in the country as of March 6 this year.

Smart Communications Inc. reported 20,882,843 of its SIMs have registered or 30.71 percent of its 67,995,734 subscribers.  Globe Telecom Inc. reported 17,005,201 registered SIMs or 19.35 percent of its 87,873,936 subscribers.

DITO Telecommunity Corp. reported a total 3,114,190 SIMs or 23.76 percent of its 13,108,103 subscribers.

With 50 days left before the deadline, DICT Undersecretary and Spokesperson Anna Mae Yu Lamentillo stressed the importance of SIM registration as mandated by law.

“SIM Registration is an important component of the nation’s cybersecurity agenda. Text scams and fraud have been cut down significantly since its implementation. Completing the registration will protect not only you but other subscribers as well,” Lamentillo said.

The deadline for SIM registration is on April 26, 2023 consistent with the SIM Registration Act’s implementing rules and regulations (IRR) issued by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).
