NGCP clears 17 projects for grid study in June

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) approved 17 new energy projects, totaling nearly 4,000 megawatts (MW) of generation capacity, for system impact studies (SIS) in June, according to the Department of Energy (DOE).

These include 3,930.317 MW of proposed power generation and 392 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity. The SIS is a prerequisite that ensures the new facilities can be reliably integrated into the national grid. It evaluates potential technical issues on the existing transmission infrastructure that could trigger the need for new investments in substations, transformers, or additional transmission lines.

Leading the list of cleared projects is the 1,246 MW Roxas onshore wind project by CI San Jose Corp. in Oriental Mindoro, the largest SIS-approved capacity for the month. This is followed by the 500 MW wind project in Cebu of the Philippine New Energy Development Inc., and another 500 MW wind project of CI San Jose Corp. also in Oriental Mindoro.

All 17 projects were cleared in June. Wind dominates the list with 10 projects, while solar accounts for three. Two proposals are for standalone BESS installations, and two others combine hydro or solar generation with storage.

While the SIS clearance is a crucial regulatory milestone, it does not guarantee project realization. Uncertainties such as financing, grid connection availability, and power offtake agreements still influence whether a project will proceed to construction and operation.
