Gilas young guns dunk doubts, pocket gold

Half court. Full throttle. No room to hide.

Gilas Pilipinas Under-21 turned the compact chaos of 3×3 basketball into a golden masterpiece on Wednesday, defeating Japan, 19-14, to capture Stop 3 of the FIBA 3×3 Youth Nations League 2026–U21 Asia-2 in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.

The victory did more than add another medal to the collection. It strengthened the Filipinos’ position in the conference standings and reinforced their growing reputation as a squad capable of matching Asia’s finest young talents possession for possession.

For the opening three minutes, neither side could gain breathing room. In a sport where every possession lasts only 12 seconds, and every mistake is magnified, the contest was as tense as it was relentless. Then Gilas found daylight. A three-point burst transformed a 3-all deadlock into a 6-3 advantage with seven minutes remaining.

Japan clawed back to within 9-8 with just over four minutes left, threatening to flip the script. Instead, the Filipinos slammed the door shut. Gilas unleashed a blistering 8-0 run, stretching the lead to 17-8 with 2:20 to play and leaving Japan scrambling for answers that never came.

The triumph also served as redemption after the squad settled for a split result in Stop 2.

Leading the charge was an unusually lengthy Philippine lineup featuring 6-foot-4 Wilhalm Lawrence Cabonilas of FEU, 6-foot-2 Jhuniel dela Rama of San Beda University, 6-foot-7 UST standout Koji Ivan Buenaflor, and 6-foot-2 Adamson guard John Earl Medina.

Tall by Philippine standards and fearless by any measure, the quartet showed that chemistry can outmuscle pressure and that hustle remains basketball’s universal language. More importantly, the gold kept Gilas firmly on course for a coveted berth in the 2026 FIBA 3×3 Under-23 World Cup.
