Leaders unite at BPI-led conference to tackle cybercrime

More than 230 leaders from government, business, and academia gathered at the 2025 BPI CyberProtect Conference, hosted by the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), to address rising cyber threats and financial fraud. With the theme “Global Best Practices in Consumer Protection: New Threats, New Defenses,” the event underscored the need for cross-sector collaboration to safeguard Filipino consumers in an increasingly digital economy.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in a written address, emphasized the critical role of cybersecurity in national development and called for unified efforts from the public and private sectors to build a resilient digital ecosystem.

BPI president and CEO TG Limcaoco echoed the call for collective action, reaffirming the bank’s commitment to working with government and stakeholders to protect consumers from cybercrime. “We see ourselves as partners not only to our customers but to the nation,” Limcaoco said.

Jonathan John Paz, BPI enterprise information security officer and data protection officer, stressed the importance of education and collaboration in strengthening consumer protection. “Protecting our customers goes beyond securing systems—it means empowering them with the knowledge they need to stay safe online,” Paz noted.

The conference featured discussions on global fraud prevention frameworks, responses to financial scams, and the impact of emerging technologies and regulatory reforms—particularly the newly signed Republic Act No. 12010, or the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act (AFASA).

Key figures in attendance included Deputy BSP governor Elmore Capule, Senator Mark Villar, Rep. Brian Poe Llamanzares, and cybersecurity experts from both local and international sectors.

BPI’s CyberProtect initiative continues to position the bank as a key player in fostering a secure digital financial landscape in the Philippines.
