Visayas placed under Yellow Alert due multiple plant outages

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Visayas grid under a yellow alert on Wednesday, November 19, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., following the unavailability of several power plants. A yellow alert indicates thin power reserves, though outages are not yet expected.

As of 8:30 a.m., NGCP reported an available capacity of 2,694 MW against a peak demand of 2,351 MW. The alert was triggered by a total of 898.6 MW in unavailable capacity, with 14 power plants on forced outage since April, four offline since 2024, two since 2023, and 14 others operating at reduced capacity.

Among the affected facilities are Aboitiz Power Corp.’s Therma Visayas Inc. coal-fired units 1 and 2 (169 MW each), which went offline due to a disruption in coal handling operations. Energy Development Corp.’s geothermal plant in Leyte was also derated to 39.3 MW from 79.5 MW.

NGCP clarified that only the Visayas grid was placed under yellow alert, while the Luzon and Mindanao grids remained in normal condition.
