Manila Electric Co. said Thursday power rates in May increased on account of higher generation charge, with the typical household to pay around P35 more for every 200 kilowatt-hour consumed during the month.
Meralco said the rate adjustment is P0.1761/kWh, increasing the rates to P11.4929/kWh in May.
The generation charge increased to P7.6697 per kWH in May from P7.3295/kWh in April as the cost of electricity bought in the spot market and from power supply agreement rise.
The rate adjustment already includes the collection of the final installment of the P1.1 billion in deferred charges, equivalent to P0.20/kWh, arising from surge in generation cost in March.
Rates at the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market rose P1.7367/kWh due to higher peak demand in Luzon, squeezing supply. Meralco sourced 18 percent of electricity during the month from the spot market.
Elecricity rates would have been higher if not for the P0.2455 a kWh reduction in transmission charge due to lower ancillary service charge.
