Megaworld launches landmark Cebu convention center

Property giant Megaworld is making its first foray into the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) sector with the opening of Mactan Expo, a standalone convention center within its 30-hectare The Mactan Newtown township in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

The P1.5-billion venue is set to host major international events, beginning with the ASEAN Travel Exchange (TRAVEX) under the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2026 from January 28 to 30. This marks the Philippines’ lead role in the upcoming ASEAN Summit and positions Megaworld as a rising player in the country’s convention and exhibition industry.

Mactan Expo is designed to combine world-class functionality with Cebuano culture. Its pillarless main hall allows for uninterrupted exhibitions, conferences, and celebrations, while sculptural wall installations made from seashells reflect the island’s natural beauty. A light-filled foyer features abstract artwork inspired by the movement of Cebu’s coastline, and the main lobby showcases commissioned works by local artists.

The venue also includes VIP lounges, Muslim-friendly prayer rooms, an integrated showroom of conference spaces named after Cebu’s famous beaches, and ample parking, allowing guests to navigate the space efficiently.

Megaworld’s entry into MICE is part of a strategic plan to diversify its township developments nationwide. Louella Caridad, former COO of World Trade Center Metro Manila, has been tapped to lead the company’s MICE business, overseeing the development, management, and operations of its convention and exhibition facilities.

The company plans to integrate its MICE offerings with Megaworld Hotels & Resorts, the largest hotel developer in the country with 14 operational properties and around 6,500 room keys, providing a complete convention-to-stay experience.

“One of Megaworld’s goals is to provide essential developments and world-class convention facilities. After Cebu, we plan to expand MICE operations to other key tourism hubs nationwide,” said Megaworld CEO Lourdes T. Gutierrez-Alfonso.

The launch of Mactan Expo signals a new era for integrated township developments that combine tourism, business, and culture, positioning Megaworld at the forefront of the Philippines’ MICE industry.
