Businesses urged to adopt standardized emissions reporting to support climate action

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), together with Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, has called on businesses to strengthen greenhouse gas (GHG) measurement and reporting, stressing that the private sector plays a key role in addressing climate change. The call was made during a forum attended by about 200 representatives from companies and industry groups.

The forum highlighted that clear, accurate, and standardized emissions reporting helps companies plan climate actions, attract investment in low-carbon solutions, and support the Philippines’ commitments under the Paris Agreement. Speakers emphasized that reliable emissions data can guide mitigation strategies, support the country’s climate targets, and prepare businesses for future climate-related policies, including the proposed Low Carbon Economy Investment Bill.

DENR officials said climate action cannot be achieved by the government alone, noting that businesses drive innovation, investment, and technology adoption. They added that transparent reporting is the foundation of responsible corporate action and long-term planning, showing that economic growth and environmental protection can go together.

During the event, DENR introduced a proposed facility-level GHG emissions calculator to help companies report emissions in a consistent and science-based way. The tool covers emissions from operations, energy use, industrial processes, and other major sources, and aligns with international standards. It will initially be used on a voluntary basis, with improvements based on user feedback.

The forum also discussed global trends in emissions reporting, climate finance, carbon pricing, and investment opportunities across key sectors such as energy, transport, agriculture, waste, and land use. The event was supported by Philippine and Japanese partners, reflecting continued cooperation to promote climate transparency and stronger private sector engagement.
