Eastern Communications (Eastern Comms) has partnered with First Gen Corporation to raise its renewable energy use to 10 percent, up from just 2 percent.
Under the agreement, First Gen will supply geothermal power to Eastern Comms’ Makati headquarters and several key Technical Operations Centers. The clean energy comes from geothermal facilities in Leyte, tapping into locally sourced renewable resources.
Company officials said the shift supports both sustainability and business continuity. Aileen Regio, co-coordinator at Eastern Comms, said integrating geothermal energy strengthens the resilience of the company’s core infrastructure. She noted that sustainability is directly linked to reliable service and long-term performance.
The move is made possible through the government’s Retail Competition Open Access (RCOA) program, which allows large electricity users to choose and contract their own power suppliers. This gives Eastern Comms more control over its energy mix while improving operational efficiency.
In addition to geothermal power, the company already operates 222 kilowatts of solar capacity at its Makati facilities. Jaeson Evangelista, co-coordinator, said the expanded renewable use supports national climate goals and aligns with the company’s push for efficient, future-ready operations.
The transition forms part of Eastern Comms’ broader modernization program, which includes automation upgrades, energy-efficient systems, and disaster resilience projects. The initiative supports its 2026 strategy, “Dare To Soar,” focused on innovation, reliability, and responsible growth.
