HD Hyundai expands $2B Philippine shipyard hub

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is expanding in the Philippines, executing nearly USD2 billion in maritime projects while expanding its industrial footprint in Subic, a top executive announced at the Philippines–Korea Business Forum.

Inho Lee, HD Hyundai’s senior official, said the projects include state-of-the-art combatant vessels for the Philippine Navy and patrol ships for the Coast Guard. “We are currently executing large-scale projects worth nearly USD2 billion,” Lee said, emphasizing the company’s deepening local presence.

Beyond ship exports, HD Hyundai plans a new commercial ports and trading center in Subic.

The move positions the firm as a “global total solution provider,” offering maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services that cover the full lifecycle of strategic naval assets.

The HD Hyundai Philippine Shipyard already occupies 33 percent of the Subic facility, roughly 120 football field, and aims to become a hub for global rotation building.

While Sourh Korea handles full-spectrum shipbuilding, the Subic site specializes in construction and critical naval operations, including MRO support.

“Why the Philippines? Your nation is a geopolitical pivot,” Lee said, citing its strategic location, logistics advantage, and shared vision for naval modernization. “Together, through shared technology and shared values, HD Hyundai and the Philippines will successfully co-navigate the future of our nations.”

The company’s Subic expansion reflects the Philippines’ rising role in regional maritime security and industrial development. Analysts note that HD Hyundai’s commitment not only strengthens naval capabilities but also boosts local employment, infrastructure, and technological know-how, reinforcing the country as a strategic partner in Asia-Pacific shipbuilding.

With billions in ongoing projects and plans for a broader commercial and maintenance hub, HD Hyundai is setting a benchmark for industrial collaboration, blending global expertise with the Philippines’ strategic advantage.
