Australia and the Philippines expanded their maritime cooperation as the Australian Border Force conducted vessel search training for Philippine Coast Guard officers in Sydney for the first time.
The course, held from March 2 to 6, 2026, aimed to strengthen the Philippine Coast Guard’s ability to carry out safe, lawful and effective vessel search operations. The training supports efforts by both countries to combat transnational crime and address maritime security challenges in the region.
Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Marc Innes-Brown said Australia is working closely with the Philippines to help keep the region peaceful, stable and prosperous.
Officials said the training highlights the growing partnership between the two countries and their shared goal of stopping the smuggling of illegal goods. Authorities noted that transnational crime threatens regional stability, harms communities, and disrupts economic development.
The program is part of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Southeast Asia Maritime Partnerships initiative, which supports regional cooperation to improve maritime security and protect vital sea lanes for trade and supply chains.
