DOE, French firm push hydrogen power in PH

The Department of Energy (DOE) and French firm Hydrogène de France Energy are optimistic about using hydrogen for cleaner energy generation in the Philippines.

DOE officials recently met with representatives of HDF Energy Philippines to discuss plans for commercial-scale hydrogen-integrated power plants in the country.

The company presented a proposed renewable energy project that combines solar power, lithium-ion batteries, and hydrogen storage systems to provide stable electricity supply, especially in off-grid areas currently dependent on diesel generators.

DOE said the partnership supports the government’s goal of boosting energy security while cutting greenhouse gas emissions through low-carbon technologies.

HDF Energy also expressed interest in supporting the Philippines’ carbon credit market and climate goals. The company said it is developing more than $1 billion worth of potential hydrogen-related investments in strategic areas nationwide.

The DOE earlier issued policies promoting hydrogen energy projects, including tax holidays, duty-free importation of renewable energy equipment, VAT incentives, and tax exemptions for carbon credits.

Hydrogen is also being studied as a cleaner fuel that can be mixed with natural gas to reduce emissions in power generation.
