Filipinos shift toward affordable, convenience-led retail

The Philippine retail landscape is undergoing a clear shift as consumers increasingly prioritize affordability and convenience, driving a rebound for neighborhood sari-sari stores while traditional supermarkets continue to lose ground.

Sari-sari stores expanded their market share to 40.9 percent in 2025, up from 40 percent in 2023, highlighting the resilience of local retail channels amid tighter household budgets.

Supermarkets fell to 37.2 percent last year from 46 percent in 2019, while grocery stores eased slightly to 7.6 percent from 7.8 percent in 2024. Convenience stores maintained a steady 4.1 percent share, supported by demand for ready-to-eat meals and immediate consumption products.

Lawrence de Leon, head of Finance & Accounting Services and investor relations officer at Philippine Seven Corporation, operator of 7-Eleven, said hard discounters pose more of a challenge to mini marts than convenience stores.

Convenience stores cater primarily to on-the-go shoppers seeking immediate consumption, with offerings such as rice meals, chilled beverages, and 24/7 service. Even when hard discounters open nearby, sales typically drop less than 10 percent and normalize quickly.

The trend reflects broader consumer downtrading. As weaker purchasing power limits spending, many Filipinos are shifting away from casual dining and quick-service restaurants toward affordable convenience store meals.

Partnerships with brands like Century Pacific Food and Max’s have helped drive food sales, although lower-cost in-store options, such as coffee sticks, have partially cannibalized premium products.

Analysts note that convenience stores occupy a distinct niche. Hard discounters focus on bulk and price, while convenience stores thrive on speed, accessibility, and chilled products.

About a third of 7-Eleven’s sales come from cold beverages, emphasizing that convenience and immediacy are increasingly as important as cost in shaping Filipino consumer behavior.
