AI gives sari-sari stores a sales edge

Artificial intelligence is making inroads into the Philippines’ vast network of sari-sari stores, helping neighborhood retailers boost sales, sharpen inventory decisions, and compete more effectively in an increasingly data-driven marketplace.

New data from Filipino tech startup Packworks showed that sari-sari stores using its AI-powered Store Insighting Project (SIP) recorded significant gains in sales performance, highlighting how advanced analytics are no longer limited to large corporations but are becoming accessible to even the country’s smallest businesses.

Drawing from more than one million monthly transactions across Packworks’ network of 300,000 micro-retailers, the company found that stores using SIP saw the median gross merchandise value (GMV) of their top 50 products surge by 79 percent, climbing from ₱187,229 to ₱335,818 just two months after adopting the platform.

The results underscore the growing commercial value of AI at the grassroots level, where store owners often rely on instinct rather than data to make purchasing decisions. By analyzing sales patterns and consumer behavior, the system generates recommendations that help retailers identify fast-selling products, optimize stock levels, and reduce lost sales from inventory shortages.

Seasonal merchandise also posted strong gains. Median GMV for these products rose by 47 percent, suggesting that store owners were better equipped to anticipate spikes in demand driven by weekends, rainy weather, and other recurring purchasing trends.

Even traditionally slow-moving items benefited from AI-assisted insights. Median GMV for these products jumped by 96 percent as retailers improved product placement and inventory turnover strategies based on data-driven recommendations.

Overall, stores that utilized AI-generated reports recorded a 29 percent increase in median sales and a 20 percent rise in transaction volumes.

The findings reflect a broader trend of digital transformation reaching deeper into the country’s grassroots economy. As AI tools become more affordable and accessible, they are increasingly serving as a competitive equalizer for micro-entrepreneurs, enabling sari-sari stores to make smarter business decisions, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen their role in local communities.
