Meralco leads Luzon in consumer power programs

The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), the country’s largest power distributor by sales, has emerged as the leading distribution utility in advancing consumer choice after the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) recognized it for having the largest number of participants in customer choice programs across Luzon.

The award highlights Meralco’s role in supporting electricity market reforms that give qualified consumers greater flexibility in choosing their power suppliers, promoting competition and wider access to renewable energy.

Meralco Senior Vice President and Head of Regulatory Management Jose Ronald Valles received the recognition from ERC Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer Francis Saturnino Juan during a ceremony attended by Energy Secretary Sharon Garin.

The utility has actively promoted key government initiatives, including the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA), the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), and the Retail Aggregation Program (RAP), which allow eligible consumers to select electricity providers based on cost, service and sustainability preferences.

The recognition comes as regulators push to deepen retail competition and accelerate the shift toward a more consumer-driven electricity market.

By expanding participation in these programs, Meralco is helping strengthen customer empowerment while supporting the country’s broader goals of improving market efficiency and increasing the adoption of cleaner energy sources.
