Building a challenger platform for inclusive, integrated healthcare

AC Health Pharma is emerging as a formidable challenger in Philippine healthcare, stitching together a rapidly expanding ecosystem of pharmacies and primary care services aimed at bringing affordable, accessible healthcare within easier reach of millions of Filipinos.

“We are an alternative and a challenger if you will,” said Atty. Yet Abarca, president and chief executive officer, underscoring the group’s intent to compete not by imitation but by reimagining pharmacy and healthcare delivery.

With around 900 stores nationwide—from Mindanao to Northern Luzon—AC Health Pharma has built one of the most expansive pharmacy networks in the country, strengthened by community-based brand Generika, its stake in St. Joseph Drug, a regional brand with deep roots in the north and its partnerships with established Japanese drugstore chain Sugi.

AC Health Pharma is also powered by its medicine distribution and importation arms, MedEthix and I.E. Medica.

At the core of its vision is a bold ambition.

“At AC Health, our group’s aspiration is to touch the life of one in five Filipinos by 2030, and AC Health Pharma plays a key role in this vision,” Abarca said. Achieving this scale will require continued store expansion and an open, partnership-driven strategy that the company sees as central to its growth model.

AC Health Pharma’s uniqueness lies in its multi-brand architecture, designed to match distinct consumer needs rather than impose a single retail identity. “We want to give options… people go to a drugstore with a very clear purpose in mind,” Abarca explained.

Generika Drugstore focuses on essential and affordable medicines at the community level, while St. Joseph Drug offers a broader assortment, including specialty products and curated health and wellness offerings enhanced through partnerships such as Sugi Pharmacy of Japan.

Generika’s franchising model has been central to its rapid expansion, enabling it to scale efficiently by partnering with local entrepreneurs who understand community needs. With around 85 percent of its network franchised, the approach has made the brand highly pervasive, embedding affordable essential medicines deep into barangay-level communities nationwide.

The group’s strategy is guided by a pragmatic, customer-first mindset, prioritizing customer needs, experience, and long-term value creation. As a new entrant facing dominant players, AC Health Pharma focuses on improving in-store experience, affordability, and relevance across different market segments. Community-based outlets serve essential medicine needs, while larger formats cater to more comprehensive pharmaceutical requirements.

Affordability remains central to its strategy, supported by vertical integration, global sourcing partnerships, and collaboration with both multinational and local pharma companies. Through its integrated pharmaceutical ecosystem—including IE Medica, which provides access to innovative and specialty medicines, and MedEthix, which strengthens its portfolio of trusted healthcare products—AC Health Pharma is able to deliver lower-cost generic equivalents while maintaining access to branded and innovator medicines.

AC Health is advancing an integrated healthcare ecosystem by linking pharmacies, clinics, and hospitals through initiatives such as in-house pharmacy pilots and partnerships with healthcare facilities. This reflects the group’s long-term goal of seamless patient navigation across care touchpoints.
