When the Philippines needed a hero, Team Falcons PH answered with a broom.
The country’s last surviving bet in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Mid Season Cup refused to let the lights go out, sweeping sister squad Falcons MENA, 2-0, on Sunday at the Esports World Cup in Paris to keep its title hopes very much alive.
Game 1 belonged to Falcons PH almost from the opening horn. The Filipinos stormed to a 3-0 lead and built a gold cushion of more than 2,000 behind Hadji’s pinpoint Selena play. His deadly Abyssal Arrows repeatedly caught Falcons MENA off guard, including a momentum-shifting double kill during the five-minute Turtle fight.
Falcons MENA briefly threatened a comeback after Sanjii’s fearless Alice initiation sparked a favorable 3-for-2 exchange while defending the bottom inhibitor turret in the 14th minute. But the Filipinos never surrendered control.
The second game turned into a slugfest before Falcons PH landed the knockout punch
Michael “Kyle” Sayson, using Hirara as hero, secured the crucial Lord at the 10-minute clash, while David “Flap” Canon’s Esmeralda bulldozed through the fight with a spectacular triple kill.
Then came the highlight everyone will remember.
As Falcons PH stormed the enemy base, Hirara unleashed a dazzling Maniac to slam the door shut, finishing with a sparkling 7-2-5 KDA that sent the Filipino faithful into celebration.
“It means a lot. We needed to win this one,” said Flap after the match. “Thank you to everyone who is supporting us. We are the last hope (of the Philippines).”
That statement carries extra weight after defending champion Team Liquid PH bowed out on Saturday. On Sunday, Malaysia’s Selangor Red Giants, the 2024 MSC champion, exited after a battle with Onic.
Now comes the real test—a knockout rematch against Indonesia’s Team Vitality, the squad that swept Falcons PH into the lower bracket.
“It’s a rematch, so we will do our best,” vowed Rowgien “Owgwen” Unigo.
With two non-Southeast Asian teams crashing the final eight and a USD 1 million prize on the line, Southeast Asia’s long-standing supremacy is under threat. Three more days in Paris will decide whether the crown finally leaves the region—or whether Team Falcons PH can keep it right where it has so often belonged.
