Thai companies are exploring investment opportunities in the Subic Bay Freeport, signaling growing regional interest in the Luzon Economic Corridor (LEC) as the Philippines positions the flagship growth corridor as a magnet for foreign capital and supply chain investments.
A Thai business delegation led by Thailand Ambassador to the Philippines Makawadee Sumitmor visited the Subic Bay Freeport on July 26 to assess opportunities in energy, logistics, technology, digital innovation, and services, sectors expected to benefit from expanding infrastructure links across Luzon.
The delegation met with officials of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), headed by Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño, who presented the Freeport as a strategic investment hub within the LEC, which connects Subic, Clark, Manila, and Batangas to create a more integrated manufacturing, logistics, and trade network.
Aliño said Subic’s deep-water port, modern infrastructure, and direct access to international shipping routes give investors a competitive base for serving both the Philippine market and the wider Asia-Pacific region.
The Thai delegation also toured major facilities inside the Freeport and explored potential investment sites. Officials pointed to the presence of PTT Philippines Corp. as evidence of Thailand’s established footprint in Subic and a potential springboard for further investments in energy and industrial development.
The SBMA also highlighted Subic’s logistical advantage, noting that sea freight between Thailand and the Freeport typically takes only three to four days, offering businesses a faster and more efficient route for regional trade and supply chains.
The visit reflects strengthening economic engagement between the Philippines and Thailand at a time when governments across Southeast Asia are seeking to diversify manufacturing bases and build more resilient supply chains. For the Philippines, attracting more Thai investors to the Luzon Economic Corridor would reinforce efforts to position the country as a regional production and logistics hub amid shifting investment patterns in Asia.
