Globe has thrown its full support behind Education Secretary Sonny Angara’s call for telcos and social media platforms to join hands in strengthening online protections for Filipino children, as the Department of Education seeks broader industry collaboration to secure young people in digital spaces.
Angara said DepEd plans to engage service providers on targeted measures amid ongoing discussions over minors’ social media use. Globe welcomed the move, stressing government, industry, schools and families each hold complementary roles: platforms must boost age-appropriate features, content moderation and parental controls; telcos can add network-level safeguards and safety education; while parents and young users get better tools and guidance.
“Protecting children online demands coordinated action across the digital ecosystem. Globe stands ready to support DepEd and all partners to create a safer online space for young Filipinos,” said Globe general counsel Froilan Castelo. “Everyone has a part to play—platforms, parents, and young people alike.”
The approach aligns with UNICEF’s view that age restrictions alone are insufficient, calling instead for comprehensive safeguards, better platform design and family support. Globe continues advancing these goals through its Digital Thumbprint Program, which builds digital citizenship, online safety and media literacy skills for students, parents and educators. Through cross-sector cooperation, Globe aims to help young Filipinos benefit from technology while navigating the digital world safely.
