Thailand’s Gunkul Engineering has partnered with local developer SunAsia Energy for a $1-billion floating solar project at Laguna Lake, set to deliver 1,000 MW capacity as Southeast Asia’s biggest of its kind. Announced Wednesday, the alliance aligns with the Philippines’ upcoming ASEAN Energy Ministers’ Meeting in October, strengthening cross-border clean energy cooperation. Gunkul targets commercial operations by end-2027, bringing over 40 years of expertise. Blueleaf Energy (Macquarie Capital) has supported development since 2021. Project drives local manufacturing of solar floaters and addresses aquatic environmental challenges. Gunkul is a listed Thai energy firm; SunAsia has delivered major solar projects nationwide.
