The National Privacy Commission (NPC) is stepping up regulatory scrutiny of digital platforms operating in the Philippines, signaling potentially tighter compliance requirements for companies processing Filipinos’ personal data, particularly those serving children and young people.
The NPC said Tuesday it had issued Show Cause Orders to Meta, Roblox, Reddit and Discord over their alleged noncompliance with registration requirements under the Data Privacy Act of 2012 and NPC Circular 16-03.
The move forms part of a broader compliance investigation covering digital platforms whose services involve processing the personal information of individuals in the Philippines.
Under the intensified oversight, the privacy regulator will examine platforms’ compliance with rules covering registration, transparency, lawful data processing, data subject rights and accountability.
The review will also assess whether companies have appropriate organizational, physical and technical security measures in place to safeguard user information.
The NPC warned that entities found violating Philippine data protection laws and regulations could face “appropriate regulatory action.”
The tougher enforcement comes as digital platforms play a growing role in Filipinos’ daily activities, including the learning and social interactions of minors.
The commission said personal information processed through these services must be handled “lawfully, fairly, securely” and in a way that respects data subjects’ rights.
The NPC said protecting young people online requires cooperation among platforms, government agencies, parents and educational institutions, while stressing that organizations handling personal data will continue to be held accountable under Philippine privacy law.
