CAB allows airlines higher fuel surcharge in September

The Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) has allowed the various airlines to impose a higher surcharge in September as jet fuel prices ramp up.

The CAB said the fuel surcharge from 1 to 30 September ramps up to Level 6 from Level 4 at present.

In the upcoming fuel matrix, the airlines are allowed to collect from passengers a surcharge ranging from P185 to P665 on domestic flights and from P610.37 to P4,538.40 on international flights.

For cargo flights, the CAB said the airlines are allowed a surcharge ranging from P0.95 to P2.78 per kilogram on domestic flights under Level 6 and from P3.14 to P23.33 per kilogram on international flights.

“Airlines wishing to impose or collect the fuel surcharge must file their application with CAB on or before the effectivity period, with fuel surcharge rates not exceeding the above-stated level,” CAB said.

Steve Dailisan, spokesperson at AirAsia Philippines, said the airline will adhere to the CAB’s fuel surcharge advisory.

“However, as a pioneer in low-cost air travel with a well-established domestic and international network, we will continue to strengthen our commitment to offering our guests the best value as well as the safest and fastest way of connecting to their loved ones,” Dailisan said.

“We also invite our guests to avail of ongoing promos and book flights early, especially for future travels,” he said.

According to the CAB, the fuel surcharge is an optional fee collected by airlines to recover costs and stem losses caused by upward spikes in fuel prices.

It is separate from the basic airfare and may be reduced or removed altogether depending on the price of jet fuel in the market.

The CAB suspended the imposition of the surcharge on all domestic and international flights in 2015 when jet fuel prices were favorable.
