Recycled plastic chairs donated to Misamis Occidental school

Discarded plastic waste has found new purpose at Clarin Elementary School, where 50 brand-new classroom chairs made entirely from recycled materials were turned over to students this week.

The donation came from the Security Bank Foundation, Inc. (SBFI). The chairs were manufactured by social enterprise The Plastic Flamingo (The Plaf), which converts plastic waste into sturdy furniture, while delivery support was provided by LBC Hari ng Padala Foundation.

For years, the school’s 118 learners made do with old chairs that had been repaired many times. Some students used simple stools with no writing surface, while others sat on furniture held together by repeated fixes. The donation fills a long-standing shortage of classroom furniture at the school.

“It is not only a donation but an answered prayer and a reminder that our learners are cared for and remembered,” said School Head Maria Erica C. Ligason.

Beyond providing much-needed classroom equipment, the initiative also carries a clear environmental message: plastic that would otherwise end up as waste can be transformed into useful, long-lasting items. The chairs serve as a daily example of sustainability, showing how discarded materials can be kept out of landfills and put to good use in the community.
